ABOUT
Carlo Benatti Angheben was born in Verona, Italy in 1965.
At the age of 15, he hitch-hiked across the United States, going from coast to coast and back. In 1987, he moved to Milan to study architecture; he met Mario De Micheli and began to deepen his studies in art history and, in particular the avant-guardes of 1900s.
In 1988, encouraged by the artist Ada Zanon Marisaldi, who appreciated his early paintings, he went to Berlin to meet and get to know some German artists among the Neuen Wilden.
During these years, he travelled all over Europe to discover the great art museums.
In 1989, he refused to perform military service, so he was sent to do an alternative service for a year at a library. After graduating in 1990 he moved to New York to attend the School of Visual Arts.
At the end of the 1992 Tompkins Square clashes, he came back to Italy, settling in the Motore KB17, a large run-down building in the old town of Verona.
For a few years, he hosted several local artists, eventually deciding to offer them a space to work.
In 1992, he collaborated in the realization of "Invita" - a cycle of exhibitions - curated by Erno Vroonen with artists such as Anish Kapoor, Giuseppe Penone and Julian Opie.
In the summer of 1993, he traveled by car around the west coast of the US with the artist and friend Giovanni Meloni.
When he came back, he met Geoffrey Hendricks, a Fluxus artist, and joined his performance "Cortile" and later met him in NY.
After his marriage with Sara Abate, he found an old farm on the slopes of the Lessini mountains, near Verona, where they moved in 2007 to live and work in nature.
Living art as a spiritual journey.
